Teacher training institute students allowed to take exam

Court bars publication of results till disposal of earlier writ petition

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed government authorities to permit 33 students of a teacher training institute in Tiruvannamalai district to write the II year Diploma in Teacher Education (D.T.Ed) examinations to be held from June 2.

Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar passed the interim direction on a petition by Grace Teacher Training Institute, Nedungunam.

The petitioner's case was that earlier 49 students were admitted by the institute. The list was not approved by the Director of Teacher Education, Research and Training on the ground that the admissions were made after the last date of admission for 2008-09.

As the students were not permitted to write the first year examinations last year, the institute moved the High Court, which by an interim order, permitted them to take the exams but ordered that the results should not be published until further orders.

Following this, 40 students wrote the exams.

The results were yet to be published. The remaining were either ineligible or left the institution.

For the second year, only 33 students underwent the course as seven students left the institution.

The petitioner's grievance was that the hall tickets were yet to be issued on the ground that for the first year the students wrote the exams only pursuant to a court order. Without an interim order of the court, the students may not be permitted to write the second year exams.

Mr. Justice Paul Vasanthakumar said taking note of the facts, including the court's earlier order, there would be an interim direction to the authorities to permit the 33 students to appear for the second year examinations. He said the direction was being granted on the condition that the results of the second year examinations should not be published till the disposal of the earlier writ petition.
