When an accident at a construction site paralysed 29-year-old Dheena Dayalan from the waist down, the Thirunindravur-native lost all hope.

It took a year of injury rehabilitation for the 29-year-old construction worker to regain his lost footing. “I thought my life was over. But the rehab changed my life. Though I’m unable to walk, I feel like this is a rebirth. Today, I see others like me and I’m overjoyed and inspired,” he said.

He was among a group of persons with spinal cord injuries that participated in a meet organised by Spinal Care India in Kotturpuram on Saturday.

The event comprised interactive sessions and cultural events and was also attended by medical experts in the field of spinal injuries.

The experts provided guidance and training to participants on undertaking day-to-day chores independently. Medical practitioners, who specialise in treating spinal cord injury, carried out tests on some participants and provided physiotherapy tips.

They also spoke on physical fitness of injured persons and suggested basic exercises that can be done at home.

“This is the second such meet I have attended and it has been very helpful to me as I undergo therapy at home,” said Jagan (27) of Saidapet, a cab driver who was injured in a motorcycle accident last year.

The day ended with cultural programmes and performances put up by the participants and volunteers.

Spinal Care India is an NGO that works for persons affected with spiral injuries.

Persons needing assistance including advice on quality medical help and training opportunities for spinal injury patients can contact the organisation on 1800-425-1210.
