Class XI student M. Keerthana seems more or less certain about becoming a teacher. On Thursday, she received Rs.1,000 as scholarship for scoring a total of 463 in her class X Board examination last year. “I will save this amount and use it at the time of college admissions,” said the teenager.
Several motivated students like her and teachers who coached students to shine as achievers in the Board examinations last year were honoured by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at a function organised by the Chennai Corporation here.
Mr. Stalin said before 1996, schools run by the Chennai Corporation did not have a very good image. “Now, the impression about the standard of education in Chennai Schools has changed. The quality is not only on a par with that of private schools, but the Chennai Schools are also all set to outdo private schools,” he said.

Outlining the initiatives of the Corporation pertaining to education, the Deputy Chief Minister said a total of Rs.12,15,500 was being given to as many 1,257 students who scored high marks in class X board examinations. As many as 222 students who secured ranks in their class XII examinations were given a total of Rs.2,02,250 as cash awards. The incentives are to motivate and support these students while pursuing their higher education.
Similarly, teachers who coached students for the class X and XII examinations and helped them secure high scores were awarded a total sum of over Rs.5 lakh.
Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami commended the Chennai Corporation for its efforts in enhancing the quality of education in its schools.
