A pavilion for promoting awareness of government welfare schemes for persons with disability with special focus on the procedures to avail them is one of the highlights of the 37th India Tourist and Industrial Fair under way at the Island Grounds here.
Apart from games for children with disability, the pavilion has stalls where special educators talk to people on various kinds of disability, and on the importance of early intervention in the case of certain disabilities.
“The idea is to promote as much awareness as possible,” said S.S. Jawahar, Secretary, Department of the Welfare of the Differently Abled.

A sensory integration room filled with coloured balls of different shapes producing different sounds also forms part of the pavilion. “It will help parents and special educators to study the children and know how they respond by involving them in various games,” Mr. Jawahar said.
Information is also available in Braille format to aid persons with visual disability, and loop induction system has been installed for the benefit of people with hearing impairment.
People have to be made aware of the technological developments to help disabled children, said V. Anu, special educator from Silver Beach Singaram Pillai Vidyalaya, who was at the fair.
