The State Government has assured South Africa of help in rural electrification and renewable energy. Harris Majeke, High Commissioner, South Africa, along with David Nkosi, First Secretary (Politicai), South African High Commission from New Delhi called on Arcot N. Veeraswami, Minister for Electricity, and requested for assistance and co-operation in the area of rural electrification and knowledge exchange in different areas of renewable energy.

According to a release from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), Mr. Majeke told the Minister that the Electricity Corporation of South Africa would be interested in holding consultations with the TNEB officials and learn from the State's experience.

Assuring all support and assistance to the High Commissioner in dealing with their developmental programmes in power, Mr. Veeraswami highlighted that the State has successfully connected all the villages. While the national average of per capita consumption was about 733 units per annum, the consumption in the State was over 1000 units. The State, therefore, would be able to assist in planned development, the Minister said.
