Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on Friday pledged to donate his organs after death, following in the footsteps of his wife Durgavathi who was the first to sign a form and launch MIOT Organ Drive (MODE).
Launching MODE, the hospital’s efforts at spreading awareness on organ donation, Mr. Stalin said his wife had volunteered to donate her organs as soon as she heard of the hospital’s new campaign. He was proud of his wife and would follow in her footsteps by donating his organs too for the MODE programme, he added, before signing a form for the same.
Mr. Stalin also urged every Tamilian to donate his or her organs after death, in order they be useful for patients who are waiting desperately for an organ and a fresh lease of life.

Though organ donation was not alien to the culture of the land, what with an example in Kannapanayanar who was probably the first-ever eye donor, there is need to spread awareness among the public. It is likely that many people may be keen on donating their organs after death, but may lack the knowledge about how to do it, he said.
P.V.Mohandas, Managing Director, MIOT Hospitals, said MODE was an initiative to mark the 10th anniversary of the hospital. In addition to being an organ drive, MODE will spread awareness and answer all questions about organ donation. This data will also be passed on to the Government’s Organ Donor Programme he said.
