Burglars allegedly gagged a septuagenarian at Secretariat Colony here early on Tuesday and decamped with cash and jewellery.
According to police sources, Subramanian (72), retired clerk in the Income Tax Department, lodged a complaint that his wife, Sulokshana (70), was alone at home when two persons came in search of him around 7 a.m. Even as she was trying to explain that he had gone to a nearby shop, they barged in. She was gagged with a piece of cloth and tied up.
The burglars opened the almirah and took away 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 6,000 in cash. Fingerprint experts examined the scene of crime. A special team of the Secretariat Colony police is investigating the case.

In a case reported at Velachery, burglars on Monday night broke into a house in Seethapathi Nagar and took away valuables after locking up other residents who were asleep.
According to police sources, the burglars gained entry by forcing open the main door of the house of U.M. Kannan (63), retired Deputy Director of Doordarshan, on the first floor. The complainant said that about 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery were missing.

Early on Tuesday, Mr. Kannan found that his room was locked from outside. The Velachery police are investigating.
Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said investigators were following definite clues.
