The CB-CID of the State police on Monday informed the Madras High Court that Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is behind the May 1, 2014 Chennai Central bomb blasts.
Confirming the involvement of the outfit in the blasts, B. Vijayakumari, Superintendent of Police, CB-CID, Chennai, said, “Out of the three accused — Aijajudeen, Zakir Hussain, and Mehaboob — two have been apprehended, while Aijajudeen was killed in an encounter by Telangana police on April 4, 2015.”
Swathi (22), a post graduate in M.Tech from Hyderabad working in Bangalore who was on her way to meet her parents at Vijayawada was killed when two bombs exploded in the Bangalore–Guwahati tri-weekly express on May 1.

The explosions took place minutes after the train reached Platform No. 9 at the Chennai Central Station at 7.15 a.m. Soon after the incident, advocate M. Durai Selvan moved the High Court seeking transfer of the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and a direction to the Indian Railways to pay a compensation of Rs. 25 lakh to the family members of the victim.
When the plea came up for hearing, the First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan said, “The PIL is solely based on newspaper reports… the latest report filed by the CB-CID states that there are three accused and they were SIMI activists, two of them have been apprehended while one of them died in an encounter.
“They are stated to be facing a trial in Madhya Pradesh in connection with a murder case, and the prisoners’ transit warrant has been obtained for their remand in the present case. Some compensation has been paid to the legal heirs of the deceased.” The Bench closed the plea without further orders.
