In yet another instance of a road caving in on an important stretch, a portion of the Sardar Patel Road near Madhya Kailash junction (towards Adyar) got damaged on Monday.

Police said that around 4.30 p.m., a motorist alerted them about the damage near the intersection of Sardar Patel Road and Canal Bank Road, a lane in the neighbourhood.

Immediately, a team of traffic policemen from Adyar Traffic wing reached the spot and placed steel barricades around the gaping hole. Traffic was allowed on the rest of the stretch.

“A few Corporation zonal officials inspected the spot and assessed the extent of the damage,” police sources said.

The stretch is busy through the day with buses and other vehicles plying towards Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Police said that this is the second cave-in on the stretch in recent months. A portion of the road at Madhya Kailash junction caved in during the heavy rain in November – December 2015 last year, police added.
