Retro reflective tapes for vehicles

July 19, 2010 01:57 am | Updated 01:57 am IST - CHENNAI:

As the number of accidents involving rear-end collision on to parked vehicles have been increasing on the State's highways, the Transport Department has launched a drive to get all transport vehicles to stick retro-reflective tapes.

Such tapes were made mandatory for all transport vehicles in May 2009 as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rule, 1989. However, many vehicles continue to run without such tapes and have been causing several accidents with multiple fatalities on the highways.

Transport Commissioner M. Rajaram has also directed vehicle dealers to have the tapes stuck to the vehicles before delivering them to customers.

Similarly, fitness certificate would be issued only if the tape is stuck as per prescribed standards, according to a press release.
