Restoring the lost green cover in Mylapore

The Mylapore Residents Welfare Assocation (MRWA) has formed a group — Vaaname Ellai (the sky is the limit) — with the objective of restoring the green cover that the neighbourhood lost due to Vardah.

Thuvakkam, a non-governmental organisation, is supporting the group in this greening work. The main focus of Vaaname Ellai is replanting large fallen trees, whose roots are intact and kept moistured.

Creating ‘link roads’

Other plans for the 2017 include clearing encroachments on Kalvi Varu Street and Canal Bank Road to make them effective link roads, thereby easing traffic congestion on Royapettah High Road and Luz Church Road. The Association is said to be already working with the Corporation to make this happen.

Task list prepared “A task list of activities that would involve participation of RWAs and the public has been prepared. These activities will begin to be carried out in the first week of January, when the post-Vardah clean-up activities will have been completed by the Corporation,” said Viswanathan K., secretary, MRWA.

More volunteers on board

MRWA will seek to increase its volunteer force. At present, it has around 50 volunteers who would take up field work.

“We are planning to involve NSS, NCC groups from the colleges nearby and also connect with Home Guards and Citizen for Safe Roads to get more volunteers on board,” he said.
