A Tirupur-based school for the deaf on Monday received the Kumara Rajah M.A.M. Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration award.

The award is presented annually to a service organisation and carries a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh, a plaque and citation.

Speaking after distributing the award to the Tirupur School for the Deaf, Justice K. Venkataraman, Judge, Madras High Court, said the problem of disability concerned not only the individual with disability but the whole society. Until the normal persons understood the persons with disability, the problem could hardly be viewed seriously.

The cash awards by the Trust will encourage people and the organisation itself to put in their earnest efforts in uplifting the persons with disability, which will provide able support to the physically challenged, he said.

The programme was organised by the Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust and the award was distributed as part of the 82nd birth anniversary celebrations of Kumara Rajah M.A.M. Muthiah Chettiar.

M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor, Annamalai University and patron of the Trust, and M.A.M.R. Muthiah, president of the Trust, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
