Residents of Porur and surrounding areas spent a sweaty and sleepless night on Saturday, as power supply was erratic in the locality. Power outages continued until early on Sunday morning.
According to residents, load shedding in localities falling under the 110 KV Porur substations, is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. “At around 7 p.m., a power cut started and supply was restored only after a few hours. After this, a blackout occurred at 10.30 p.m. and supply was restored only at midnight. It was disrupted again at around 2.30 a.m. on Sunday morning,” said N. Arvind, a resident of Valsaravakkam.
Senior citizens and children were the worst affected. “I have a newborn baby. She could not sleep and kept crying. My wife and I also could not sleep,” said C. Kumar, who is a resident of Ayyapanthangal.

In Valsaravakkam too, residents experienced a rough night. “Power supply was disrupted at around 6.30 p.m. and was restored some time later. Then there was no power from 9 p.m. till midnight,” said S. Arumainathan, president of Virugambakkam Residents Welfare Association.
He said that most residents had to stay outdoors due to the heat. “As people were not able get a good night's sleep, the following day's schedule was affected. Luckily, it happened to be a Sunday, so only our personal work was disrupted,” said Mr. Arumainathan. “Besides, low voltage problems have been plaguing us for the past one month,”
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation officials claim this occurred due to problems with equipment at the Porur sub-station. “Areas including Ramapuram, Ayyapanthangal and Porur were affected,” said an official.
