After six months of theoretical and practical training, 171 young women and men joined the Tamil Nadu police as Sub-Inspectors (Technical Service) after a passing-out parade at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy in Unamanchery on Friday evening.
Letika Saran, Director-General of Police, reviewed the parade and handed over medals to the SIs who excelled in different categories. The training commenced in January and they were trained on operation and maintenance of various communication equipment. Among the 171 SIs, 123 are men.
Six among them are postgraduates in engineering, 72 engineering graduates and 93 diploma holders in engineering-related subjects.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Letika Saran said technical services played a vital role in the administration of the department and that time and again, Tamil Nadu police had demonstrated that they were second to none in this field.
Lakshmi Prasad, Inspector-General of Police, Technical Service, paid tributes to Amit Verma, former Additional Director-General of Police, TNPA, who passed away recently and who was instrumental in design and layout of the training programme.
S.R.Sreelatha won the gold medal and sword for the overall best cadet. A native of Nagercoil, she is a graduate in electronics and communication engineering. She said she was glad that she received the sword for the best cadet, competing with the male trainees.

Vasantha Chitra and Sunil won the silver and bronze medals in law and indoor activities. Saravanakumar, who was the parade commander, Vadivel Kumar and Jeyaseelan topped outdoor activities.
Airmen inducted
Earlier, 342 young men were inducted into the Indian Air Force after a passing-out parade at IAF Station in Tambaram.
The Airmen were trained at Tambaram for nine months and had completed four months of basic training in Belgaum, officials said. Air Marshal Arup Raha, Senior Air Station Officer, Western Air Command, was the reviewing officer at the parade.
He addressed the Airmen and handed over trophies to meritorious Airmen. The best all-rounder trophy from the Mechanical Training Institute went to Shailendra Pratap Lal, while the trophy for the best all-rounder from Workshop Training Institute went to Tarique Raza.
Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma, Air Officer Commanding, Tambaram, was present on the occasion.
The Airmen gave a demonstration of their skills in martial arts and rifle drill.
An aero-modelling display was made. Students from a couple of schools were invited for the occasion.
