The Left parties in Tamil Nadu maintained that they had only an electoral understanding with the AIADMK and that there was no permanent alliance.

The CPI(M) and the CPI were part of the AIADMK alliance in the last Lok Sabha polls and won a seat each.

When asked whether the Left parties were continuing in the AIADMK alliance, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said, "You better ask them."

Reacting to Ms. Jayalalithaa's comments, CPI(M) State secretary N.Varadarajan told The Hindu that the understanding reached between the two parties was over after the elections. He said if the government at the Centre and in the State implemented anti-people policies, the Left parties would join hands with like-minded parties to launch protests.

CPI State secretary D. Pandian also said his party had only seat adjustments with the AIADMK and there was no permanent alliance
