The Young Men's Indian Association (YMIA) has informed the Madras High Court that no step would be taken without obtaining the court's order in the matter relating to Gokhale Hall on Armenian Street, George Town here.
When a public interest litigation petition seeking a direction to take steps to protect and preserve Gokhale Hall as a heritage building came up before a Division Bench comprising Justices Prabha Sridevan and P.P.S. Janarthana Raja, the Bench said that in December last year it had directed INTACH to make a second report. That had been done. The report, Preliminary conservation study report of Gokhale Hall, Chennai, was being taken on file.
The report referred to features including historical significance and basic architectural profile. It also referred to the present state, immediate conservation measures to be taken and the need for conservation.

The YMIA's counsel said a new president had taken over now and they proposed to inspect the building and only thereafter take a decision.
The association was informed that the government had appointed a Heritage Conservation Committee by a G.O. of April 1 this year and its recommendations would be necessary.
