Neel Metal Fanalca, which is already involved in garbage collection at 19 wards of Ambattur, has bagged the contract to clear garbage in six more wards.
The private firm launched its conservancy operations in Ward 9 and Wards 13 to 17 covering areas such as Krishnapuram, Venkatapuram, Ambattur OT and part of Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road on Monday.
Ambattur Municipality chairman K.N. Sekar flagged off six mini-trucks and 25 tricycles to be used for the operation at a function held at Ambattur OT.

Ambattur Municipal Commissioner Anu George said that the earlier contract given to Swachatha Corporation, which cleared garbage at these wards in Ambattur, was foreclosed. The decision was taken based on the complaints received about the irregular garbage collection.
With this, a total of 25 wards at Ambattur have been privatised for garbage disposal. At present, Neel Metal Fanalca cleared about 120 tonnes of garbage in 19 wards. It would be involved in the collection of additional 20 tonnes of garbage from six more wards, she said.

Speaking to The Hindu , she said residents may experience an improvement in the garbage disposal system with the municipality also procuring 120 bins and three more compactors to carry out works in 27 other wards. Besides taking the initiative to introduce source segregation, representatives of every street have been trained about monitoring cleanliness of the area.
Litter-free zones
Steps are also being taken to make three wards in Anna Nagar Extension litter-free zones as a pilot project, Ms. George added.
Neel Metal Fanalca’s vice-president G.Thirugnana Sambandam said vehicles and 90 compactor bins worth Rs.59 lakh would be used to collect waste in six wards. About 120 people would be involved in garbage collection operations in these areas.
