“I have spent some of the best years of my life in the Navy and have had a lot of fun times as well,” said Captain N.S. Mohan Ram, speaking about his 25-year stint in the Indian Naval Services.
Speaking at the release of his book My Ships Sailed the Seas But I Sailed Ashore on Wednesday, Capt. Mohan Ram said that he had written about his experiences in designing warships and meeting people from across the world. “I hope that the book not only appeals to people, but also gets them interested in the naval services,” he said.
The book was released by Venu Srinivasan, chairman of Sundaram-Clayton Ltd and TVS Motor Company Ltd. Historian S. Muthiah received the first copy.

Speaking about Capt. Mohan Ram’s journey in the Navy and his later association with TVS Motors, Mr. Venu Srinivasan said that it would be interesting to read his experiences in designing a warship as he had been an outstanding engineer. “He has always been passionate about his work and one of his very important collaborations with us was working on developing the ‘Scooty’. From warships to automobiles, he has been involved in extremely diverse projects,” he recalled.
Commodore R.B. Varma, who introduced the book, said that Cap. Mohan Ram had brought out the pride in being a part of the Navy in his book. “The book is peppered with anecdotes which will make for an engaging read,” he said.
“I have been campaigning for more people to write biographies as they are perfect reflections of the social history of the time. Some form of record should be left for our descendants through the written word,” Mr. Muthiah said.
