The Photo Editor’s take

There is an element of mystery in the photograph that makes you take a second and third look at it.

A single lantern illuminates the contrasting expressions of a young vendor and the lady.

The exposure is balanced to produce details in the heavy light; the highlight on the faces to the deep shadows.

The photographer has chosen an angle which emphasises the smoke or vapour from the boiling peanuts aided by a slight breeze and isolates the subject.

The stray light in the background of the lady's head and the boy's hand breaks the monotony of the otherwise black background.
