August 17, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:18 am IST - CHENNAI:

At its 20{+t}{+h}year reunion held last week, the Madras Medical College batch of 1991-1997, decided to do something for its alma mater. And they have decided to focus on palliative care.

“When we looked into palliative care in Chennai, we found that the Dean Foundation was working in the area, and ran a palliative care ward at the Institute of Child Health, Egmore,” said Kavitha Thukkaram, palliative care physician, and an alumnus of MMC.

Besides collecting funds, the batch hopes to spread awareness about the importance of palliative care and wants to start palliative care programmes in other government hospitals and have medical students trained there, said Dr. Thukkaram.

“We have raised some money, and are hoping to raise more. We also would like to get government funding for palliative care at State hospitals,” she said.
