Transparency in revenue collections and women empowerment at the village level impressed a team of panchayat chiefs from Jammu and Kashmir visiting Mudichur in the city’s southern outskirts on Tuesday.
The 40-member team is here at Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, as part of six-day training programme on local governance.
One of the village presidents from Rajouri district of Jammu region, Choudhary Mir Hussain, said technology has made revenue collections transparent here and Tamil Nadu has to be appreciated for its focus on women empowerment at the panchayat level.

The team interacted with members of women self-help groups at the solid waste management centre in Mudichur and evinced keen interest on women involvement in sanitary napkin manufacturing and marketing of purified water at a lower price. “It is an attempt to let them learn lessons in community participation in local self governance,” said K. Gireesan of School of Governance and Public Policy from RGNIYD.
The team members would visit a few village panchayats in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Vellore districts in the next few days to get a glimpse of infrastructure projects envisaged and developed by the local bodies, Mr. Gireesan said. Mudichur panchayat president P. Damodaran explained the concept of women SHGs, its advantages and also certain disadvantages while implementing innovative projects.
