Land acquisition for the Porur grade separator, to come up at the busy junction on Mount Poonamallee Road, has begun. The construction of the Rs.34.72-crore facility will begin later this month, according to officials of the Highways Department.
A total of 61 notices were issued for acquiring land. The proposed road width for the project is 36.7 metre. Owners of buildings, including commercial establishments, have started demolishing the structures between the stretch of Porur and Poonamallee as per the boundary guidelines given by the department.
They have been demolishing parts of buildings on their own for nearly a week now. “They are doing this as they fear that there will damage to other parts of structures if we demolish,” an official said. The department plans to issue notices to building owners on the stretch towards Guindy soon.

The 475-metre grade separator would allow four lane traffic and the service road on either side would be 7.5 metre wide. Footpaths and stormwater drains would also be provided.
The department has already deposited nearly Rs.7 crore for shifting electricity lines and drinking water pipeline, which would take place simultaneously. The work is expected to be completed in 18 months.
The daily traffic volume at the Porur junction is estimated to be nearly one lakh passenger car units. With the completion of the project, residents of fast developing areas around Porur and Poonamallee would get respite from traffic congestion at the Porur junction.
