Karti Chidambaram moots election for TNCC chief post

July 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:39 am IST - CHENNAI:

AICC member Karti Chidambaram made a strong case for constitution of a defined electoral college to select the leader.

Does a tweet on reports of corruption deserve a possible penalty of three years imprisonment? The answer seems to be yes, at least according to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s son Karti (in picture). He filed a complaint against businessman Ravi Srinivasan with the Puducherry police, which charged Mr. Srinivasan under Section 66-A of the IT Act, 2008.

At a time when senior Congress leaders are camping in New Delhi and lobbying for the TNCC president post, AICC member Karti Chidambaram made a strong case for constitution of a defined electoral college to select the leader.

“Let us put an end to the practice of nomination by the party high command. We should have a democratic process to elect the TNCC chief. It is the only way to elect a leader who enjoys popular support,” said Mr Chidambaram.

He said the defined electoral college could comprise MPs and MLAs, former MPs and MLAs, former TNCC presidents, PCC and AICC presidents. “The composition of the electoral college can be flexible and we can also have a few reserved posts for Dalits and the minorities,” he said.

Mr Chidambaram said it was almost half a century since the Congress lost power in Tamil Nadu and a leader elected through the democratic process alone could take the party to the next level. “All over the world, even candidates for Presidents and Prime Ministers are finalised through the election process,” he said.
