June 07, 2010 03:10 am | Updated 03:10 am IST - Chennai:

In a daring burglary at a jewellery shop on Kolathur-Redhills Road in Kolathur, thieves made a two-foot hole in the wall to gain entry into the shop and decamped with 25 kg of silver jewellery on Sunday. However, a locker containing gold jewellery was intact.

Kolathur police said Rishi Jewellers owned by Amith Surana (35) of Gopalapuram, which was inaugurated on Akshaya Trithiya last month, was targeted by burglars in the early hours of Sunday. Amith opened the shop in the morning and found the silver jewellery and lamps missing from the display shelves.

“The culprits had made a hole in the wall on the rear end of the shop and slipped into a section of the shop. They might have attempted to break open the locker containing gold jewellery but did not succeed. The locker was attached to the wall. But they took away the silver jewellery and a one sovereign gold ring and Rs.2,500 from the cash box inside,” said an investigating officer. An open area with inadequate lighting behind the jewellery shop and several buildings under construction in the neighbourhood may have helped the suspects, he added. Senior police officials visited the crime scene. Fingerprints were lifted from the spot. The loss is estimated to be over Rs.7 lakh, police sources added.
