Jayalalithaa announces sailing academy at Marina

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced the setting up of a sailing academy on Marina, the second longest beach in the world, and a centre for excellence in sailing and rowing.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, she said the AIADMK’s election manifesto had promised to create facilities for water sports and her government would spend Rs. 7 crore for establishing the sailing academy and centre for excellence in sailing and rowing.

Pointing out that sports played a vital role in shaping the personality of students, the Chief Minister said her government had placed thrust on creating infrastructure to ensure participation of sportspersons from Tamil Nadu in international events.

She said an e-library would be set up at Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University at a cost of Rs 2.51 crore to give teachers and students access to modern sports training and techniques.

The Chief Minister said an artificial rock climbing set-up would be constructed at the NCC Training Academy coming up at Idayapatti in Madurai at a cost of Rs. 12 crore. The allocation for the climbing set-up is Rs. 30 lakh.
