The rain on Friday came as a bonanza to residents of the city, who were hoping that the pleasant weather which began on Thursday would last.

While some localities, including Adyar, T.Nagar and Koyambedu experienced mild drizzles in the morning, several other parts of the city had some sharp showers in the evening, bringing down the temperature and increasing the humidity to 90 per cent. Some localities also received rain overnight.

Meteorological Department officials said the rain was caused by an upper air trough running from Vidarbha to Lakshadweep across Telangana and interior Karnataka.

The areas on either side of the trough line were experiencing rains, they said. A total of 2.6 mm rainfall was recorded in Nungambakkam, and 9 mm in Meenambakkam during the 12 hours ending 8.30 p.m. The maximum temperature in Nungambakkam was 32.9 degree Celsius and in Meenambakkam 34.2 degree Celsius.

The forecast for Saturday said it would be a generally cloudy day with one or two spells of showers or thunder showers in some areas.
