Eligible families identified for alternative accommodation

As many as 3,947 families along canals maintained by the Chennai Corporation have been found eligible for alternative accommodation.

The civic body will provide the data to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) for rehabilitation of the families.

The Corporation has completed the enumeration of encroachments along the 16 canals maintained by itand identified 4,233 encroachments along the 16 canals.

Enumeration

The TNSCB , the Public Works Department and the Chennai Corporation started enumeration of families along waterbodies in and around Chennai last year.

The civic body was expected to complete the enumeration of families residing on encroached land along the 16 canals by October 2010.

Rehabilitation initiative

As the civic body has completed collection of data on the families including their photographs, the list is likely to be sent to the TNSCB next week to facilitate the rehabilitation initiative.

The encroachments initially estimated along the 16 canals were 5,418.

The nearly-4,000 families found eligible for alternative accommodation would be allotted new houses by the TNSCB.

The largest number of encroachments has been found along the Mambalam Canal. The estimated number of encroachments was 3,700 and after enumeration 2,470 families were found eligible for rehabilitation.

The enumeration of encroachments along other canals including Captain Cotton, Vysarpadi, Kodungaiyur, Jawahar, MGR, Egankipuram, Jafferkhanpet, Guindy Estate, Chellamal, Nungambakkam, Trustpuram, Raj Bhavan, Reddikuppam and TVS canals has been completed. The families would be rehabilitated after making alternative arrangements.
