3-year-old girl run over
A three-year-old girl was fatally hit by a speeding school van in Ayapakam on Tuesday.
According to police, the victim, K. Uma Maheswari of Annai Angujam Street, was walking along the road to her house when the van going that way after dropping some students hit her causing a grievous head injury. She died on the way to the hospital. The van driver fled the scene.

Cash and jewels were reported stolen from a house in Kodambakkam on Monday.
Police said Sanjay Arya (44) of Pasumadathu Street lodged a complaint that burglars had entered the house by breaking the lock and stolen Rs.2 lakh, diamond stud and a gold chain. The incident took place when the family had gone out. In another case, Murali (52) of Buvaneswari Nagar lodged a complaint with the Valasaravakkam police that burglars had taken away Rs.30,000 and 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery from his house on Monday.

Held for thefts
Two youths posing as rag pickers who allegedly stole valuables from different houses in the Mylapore and Pattinapakkam areas were apprehended on Tuesday.
Police said a special team formed to investigate complaints of thefts apprehended Muthu (22) of Taramani and Vikram (20) of Thoraipakkam. The suspects confessed to having stolen jewellery, mobile phones, etc., from houses. Their modus operandi was to pretend as rag pickers and enter houses found open during the early hours. Some jewellery were recovered from them, police said.
In another case, S. Amaravathi (25) and J. Mary (55) of Katpadi were arrested on charges of stealing gold chains and cash from passengers in buses. According to police sources, the women used to travel in buses in Mylapore and adjoining areas and steal gold chains and wallets. A total of Rs.44,000 and three sovereigns of gold chains were recovered from them.
CDs seized
Central Crime Branch police arrested Deenadayalan (40) and Kamalraj (23) on charges of selling pirated CDs of new Tamil films in Tambaram on Tuesday. They had arrived in a car from Puducherry just then and packed 20,000 pirated CDs in several bundles, meant for sale at the Tambaram bus terminus. The value of the CDs has been put at Rs.20 lakh.
Six held
Suburban police arrested six men for running illegal bars and selling Indian Made Foreign Liquor meant for sale through government liquor outlets. Police said a special drive against illegal bars was launched in St. Thomas Mount district and policemen arrested the six men from Madipakkam, St. Thomas Mount, Tambaram and Selaiyur. More than 200 liquor bottles were seized.
