College student dies as bus hits scooter

A college student died on the spot when the scooter which she was riding was hit by an overspeeding private bus near Tambaram on Thursday.

Traffic police said Mercy Irudaya Mary (23), daughter of Sahaya Soosai, was a resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Mudichur. Her parents and other family members had gone to Andhra Pradesh to take part in the funeral of a relative. On Thursday evening, Mercy had taken her niece, Grace (12) to a supermarket nearby.

After making purchases, Mercy started her scooter and was trying to take a ‘U' turn when the bus hit it killing her instantly. Grace did not get on to the scooter and was waiting on the other side of the road, when the accident took place around 5 p.m.

Mercy was a final year M.Com student at Loyola College. After news about the accident spread, angry residents of Lakshmi Nagar gathered on the road. They said Lakshmi Nagar had become an accident-prone spot and the widening and improvement of Mudichur Road had only increased such accidents due to overspeeding and rash driving.

Electrocuted

A man was electrocuted and another seriously injured when an overhead power supply cable fell on them at Bharathi Nagar, Mudichur, on Thursday evening.

Peerkankaranai police said S.Sathyaraj (24) and D.Arun (23) were employees of Gani Hardware stores. They were loading iron rods onto a mini-van when the overhead power supply cable of TNEB fell on them. Sathyaraj was charred to death on the spot while Arun was hospitalised with serious injuries.
