Civic works affected as contractors left unpaid

June 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:19 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Interior road work by Greater Chennai Corporation continues to be hit as the civic body is unable to pay contractors Rs. 600 crore for projects that have already been completed.

Corporation officials said a number of roads have not been re-laid by contractors who have not received payment for the infrastructure projects that they have already undertaken.

Work on at least 1,000 interior roads damaged in various parts of the city was expected to be completed before July 15. But relaying of most of the roads is expected to be delayed.

The civic body has initiated a drive to collect property tax from residents to cope with the fund crunch.

A chunk of the 11.5 lakh property tax assessees who have failed to pay property tax are set to receive notices this month.

The civic body has already asked residents and traders to pay property tax for this half-year period.
