Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran has sent a proposal to the State government seeking bifurcation of the Central Crime Branch and subsequently sanction a new post in the rank of a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Rajendran said offences such as cyber crimes, bank/credit card frauds, crimes involving mobile phones and video piracy required focussed investigation.
“We want to have a wing headed by a DCP to investigate such technology-oriented crimes. Conventional crimes involving land grabbing, money lending etc can be handled separately by another wing,” he said.

Mr. Rajendran said that about 250 young constables handpicked from Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) Battalions would be deployed in crime-prone police stations and exposed to specialised investigation skills. The existing vacancies in different ranks were expected to be filled up soon.
He said that installation of surveillance cameras in banks and malls helped in detecting at least nine crimes in the recent months. “We are convening a meeting of top bank officials in June to lay emphasis on the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) network in banks and ATMs,” he added.
