The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will stage a demonstration in front of the Periyar statue in Villupuram on Friday to protest against the government’s move to shift the Villupuram District Headquarters Hospital to Villupuram Government Medical College.

In a release issued here on Thursday, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa stated that the DMK government would be punishing hundreds of poor people in and around Villupuram if it shifted the Villupuram District Headquarters Hospital, which received about 3,000 outpatients everyday.

She said the authorities were keen on shifting the hospital before March 7, when Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was scheduled to inaugurate the medical college, which was under construction.

The District Headquarters Hospital should be allowed to function in Villupuram itself, she said.
