Students of Madras Christian College were treated to some novel perspectives on the dangers of massive infrastructure and power projects on Thursday.
A silent theatre performance by Andrea Pereira and Stephi Madurel, postgraduate students from Goa, at the Martin Hall auditorium focussed on environmental issues and sought to communicate the immense dangers of environmental degradation.
The duo that is part of SPACE (Society for the Promotion of Arts, Culture and Education) Theatre Ensemble, a self-sustaining group based in Goa, and had earlier performed in Kudankulam.

They began with a rendition of ‘Woman River’ — a poem by Ujwala Samarth and then proceeded to perform a silent play titled ‘The Legend of Paikeachi Zor’ on a sacred spring in Goa. At the end of the performance, they observed that anyone who spoke about the environment was branded an ‘activist.’
“Is it not alright for any person, young or old, to share some concern about the environment?” Ms. Pereira asked.
The group has performed Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand. They have also organised trips in Goa where people were made aware of the damage inflicted on springs and forests by indiscriminate mining.
