Nine college students were arrested on charge of causing damage to three Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses in Nungambakkam on Wednesday.
According to police sources, a group of students of Nandanam Arts College boarded a bus (41-D) in Thirumangalam bus stand and forced other passengers to get down. They asked the driver to proceed towards their college. On information, police diverted the bus via Nelson Manickam Road to avoid any clash with students of another college on EVR Salai.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane) T.S. Anbu said that one student, Karthikeyan (23) of Kolathur, who was travelling on the footboard, slipped and fell at the Nungambakkam sub-way. On seeing this, the Choolaimedu Sub-Inspector of Police, Radhakrishnan, moved the injured student into a share-autorickshaw and tried to take him to the nearest hospital. However, other students got off the bus and ran towards the vehicle thinking that Karthikeyan sustained grievous injuries, he said.

They shifted him to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital in an autorickshaw where he was given first aid. Other students allegedly damaged the share-autorickshaw.
They also threw stones on some MTC buses damaging the window panes, he said.
At the same time, another group of students allegedly threw stones on an EMU (suburban) train near Nungambakkam railway station. “There was minor damage to the train. EMU services were disrupted briefly. Action is being taken in this regard,” Inspector General of Police (Railway Protection Force) G.M.P. Reddy said.

A special team formed to investigate the case arrested nine students, eight studying in the Nandanam Arts College, under different Sections of the Indian Penal Code and the provisions of Tamil Nadu Public Property Damage and Loss Act.
They were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, the sources said.
