In a shocking incident at Elephant Gate on Tuesday evening, a 57-year-old woman was gagged and tied up in her house by her domestic help and his accomplice who robbed her of gold jewellery, diamond bangles and Rs. 5 lakh. The victim was released hours later after her grandson reached home.

Sources with the Elephant Gate police said the incident took place at the residence of Ambrowdevi who was residing with her grandson Ajay (23) at their house on Kalathi Pillai Street, Elephant Gate. The woman’s son Suresh Kumar, Ajay’s father, was staying and working in Nagpur.

Few weeks ago, Ambrowdevi and Ajay appointed a man identified as Shanker (23), a native of Bihar, as domestic help after he claimed to be an orphan who was struggling to make ends meet.

On Tuesday evening, Ajay went out on some work while his grandmother and Shankar were alone in the house. Having realised she possessed gold and diamond jewellery and cash, Shankar devised a plan and called in his accomplice. The duo attacked Ambrowdevi and tied her up in a room after gagging her. They broke open an almirah and fled with gold weighing 500 g, two diamond bangles and Rs. 5 lakh.

Ajay came home around 8.30 p.m. and found the door was unlocked and the house was ransacked. He went in to find his grandmother tied up in a room, sources added.

Ajay lodged a complaint with the Elephant Gate police who are probing further.
