An unidentified person swindled a man who came to an ATM to withdraw cash in Triplicane on Thursday.

Haja Nizamuddin (57) had received ₹50,000 from his daughter who is abroad. He went to the SBI ATM on Gaffoor Street near his residence to withdraw the money. Since his hand was fractured and bandaged, he struggled to withdraw money from the ATM. He attempted to insert the card twice but failed to receive the money. On seeing him struggling, an unidentified person who was standing behind him at the ATM enclosure offered his assistance.

The suspect first made the Nizamuddin enter the PIN and confirm the balance. He saw that the balance was ₹50,000. After figuring out the PIN, the suspect told Nizamuddin that there was no cash in the ATM and managed to slip another card into Nizamuddin’s hand while retaining the latter’s card.

Immediately after Nizamuddin left, the suspect went to another ATM and withdrew the money from Nizamuddin’s account. After a few minutes, Nizamuddin received an SMS stating that ₹20,000 had been withdrawn. Shocked, he rushed to a police station during which time, another ₹20,000 was withdrawn. Following Nizamuddin’s complaint, the Ice House police are analysing the footage obtained from the CCTV cameras in the ATM.
