December 29, 2014 08:29 am | Updated 08:29 am IST - CHENNAI:

A 36-year-old man died after he was hit by a Tambaram-bound electrical multiple unit (EMU) train on Saturday. The government railway police (GRP) identified the man as Vasudevan of Maduvankarai, Guindy.

The victim was walking along the track and flung himself in front of the train between St. Thomas Mount and Guindy railway stations, a GRP officer said.

It appeared to be a case of suicide, he said.

Though the motorman applied brakes in an attempt to bring the train to a halt, it ran over the man. The train resumed its journey after 30 minutes.

The body lay beside the track for more than three hours. GRP personnel from Egmore reached the spot after three-and-a-half hours and took the body to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.

Domestic problems may have led the man to the extreme step, the police said. The Egmore GRP are investigating.
