A five-member gang brutally hacked a 35-year-old gangster to death on Sunday afternoon near a TASMAC shop at Karunanidhi Nagar in Tondiarpet. Gang rivalry is suspected to be behind the killing.

R.K. Nagar police said the victim was K. Dhanasekar, a resident of Parameshwaran Nagar in Karimedu, Tondiarpet. He was involved in various cases including murder. The attack took place around 1.30 p.m. when Dhanasekar was returning from a TASMAC outlet near his home. The killers came in an autorickshaw and hacked Dhanasekar in full public view.

Onlookers ran away from the spot in fear and panic spread in the area. He received cut wounds on his neck and died on the spot.

An R.K. Nagar police team reached the spot and recovered the body after carrying out preliminary probe.

A case of murder has been registered and investigators are searching for the killers.

The residents of Karunanidhi Nagar, where the killing took place, have been demanding the removal of the TASMAC outlet from the spot as it has become a menace for passers-by, especially women and children. Though the murder may not be connected to outlet, residents state that drunken brawls have become a daily affair.

Numerous petitions have been sent to the authorities but they have turned a deaf ear, residents added.
