The Chennai Corporation will develop a new road connecting Velachery, Perungudi and Taramani MRTS stations. The land for the project has been handed over by the Railways to the Chennai Corporation. The civic body has invited bids for the 18-metre-wide 3.4 km road.

The road will have one metre-wide cycle tracks on either side with street furniture. The road will ease traffic congestion in Velachery, Taramani, Perungudi, Rajiv Gandhi Salai and Taramani Link Road.

“We have decided to develop a bitumen road in three months. The road will be suitable for development of multi-storeyed buildings and many high-rises may be developed in a few years. During the process of development, the digging of roads will be required. After development of the area, we may opt for a concrete road,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

A number of motorists proceeding towards areas such as Tambaram from Tiruvanmiyur will use the road. The road will also improve patronage of MRTS by improving non-motorised transport.
