25-year-old murdered in Chennai

A youth’s body was found in an unused septic tank in Ambattur Estate, after he was allegedly murdered by a gang for assaulting a man who had harassed his niece. The police have launched a hunt for the seven suspects in the murder.

The Thiruninravur police identified the victim as Subu alias Thamizhmani (25), a resident of Pudiya Anna Nagar in Pudur near Ambattur. On Monday, Thamizhmani had assaulted one Udayakumar (24), of Bhajanai Koil Street in Mangalapuram, Ambattur Estate, after the latter allegedly harassed his niece. Udayakumar was hospitalised following the attack. Fearing retaliation, Thamizhmani hid in his aunt Amudha’s house in Thiruninravur.

“Udayakumar’s younger brother, Rajkumar, found out about Thamizhmani’s hideout. He, along with six of his friends, kidnapped him from his aunt’s house, following which she lodged a complaint. A case of kidnap was registered and a probe began,” said an investigating officer.

On Friday evening, residents complained of a foul smell emanating from an abandoned septic tank behind the Industrial Training Institutein Ambattur Estate. A police team fished out a decomposed body from the tank and identified it as Thamizhmani’s.

The case was altered to one of murder, and a search is on for the killers, the officer added.
