A city court on Thursday handed out a sentence of 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a youth who physically assaulted a minor girl after promising to marry her.

According to the prosecution, when Suresh Kumar (25) was working in a furniture shop in Aminjikarai, he befriended a 16-year-old girl who was working in a shop opposite his place. He took her to his brother’s house where he physically assaulted her after assuring her they would get married. When she got pregnant, he refused to marry her.

After the girl gave birth, her family asked Kumar to marry her. But he refused and threatened to kill the baby. Following a complaint, the Anna Nagar Police arrested Kumar and charged him under Sections 376(punishment for rape), 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) and 416 (cheating by impersonation) of the Indian Penal Code.
