2 houses burgled, gold, cash missing

A couple of daring burglaries were reported in the city over the past couple of days and gold jewellery, silver articles and a large amount of cash were stolen.

In the early hours of Tuesday, robbers broke into the house of a senior citizen in Kolathur while the residents were fast asleep. Policemen said the burglars broke into the house of Palani (61) on Poompuhar Nagar 26 Street and took away 25 sovereigns, silver articles weighing 2 kg and Rs. 2,000 in cash. The suspects managed to gain entry into the house by breaking open the main door that was bolted from inside.

In another burglary at a posh locality on Siruvallur Road in Perambur on Monday, a gang broke into the locked flat of a doctor couple and fled with gold jewellery weighing 15 sovereigns and Rs. 5 lakh in cash.

Murali Mohan, a doctor at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and his wife left on Sunday evening after locking the door of their third floor flat in a multi-storey complex. While Murali Mohan reported for work, his wife called on her relatives. Sembium police suspect that a gang of four men committed the burglary. The gang is believed to have entered the apartment complex pretending to be residents.

The CCTV system was not of help as the suspects shielded their faces. The men cut open the door lock with a hacksaw blade and gained entry. They pocketed the gold and cash and fled. The burglary came to light after Murali Mohan returned home on Monday afternoon and noticed the door lock broken and the house ransacked.
