17-year-old killed in bike accident

A teenager died on the road after he crashed his brand new motorcycle into the gates of the University of Madras on Wallajah Road, close to Beach Road, on Saturday morning.

Police said he was ineligible to hold a driving licence and was not wearing a helmet.

The Anna Square traffic police identified the deceased as 17-year-old Karthick Sivakumar, a resident of 33 Cross Street in United Colony, Kolathur.

“The accident took place around 7 a.m., when Karthick and his friend Ulaganathan (18), also from Kolathur, were heading to the Marina. Riding at top speed on Wallajah Road, Karthick tried to manoeuvre on a bend but lost control and crashed into the gate,” said investigating officer Ravikumaran, inspector, Anna Square traffic investigation (in-charge).

Karthick died on the spot of severe head injuries while Ulaganathan’s condition remains critical.

The body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem and handed over to Karthick’s family members in the evening.

Despite not having a licence, Karthick had been riding his new motorcycle, purchased by his father Sivakumar, an employee of a courier firm, a few days ago. The vehicle was yet to be registered.

“He had secured admission to MGR Engineering College in Maduravoyal and was to join classes in a few weeks. He would have turned 18 on Wednesday,” said Jayakumar, friend of Karthick’s older brother Surya.
