The organs of a 16-year-old boy, who was declared brain dead, were harvested at Global Hospitals on Friday.

According to Joy Varghese, consultant hepatologist at the hospital, the boy was on a two-wheeler and was involved in a road traffic accident in Madhuranthakam.

He was admitted to the hospital on March 4 with severe head injuries, Dr. Joy added.

“We performed a craniotomy and tried to save him, but the outcome was poor. On Thursday evening, he was declared brain dead,” he said.

The family agreed to donate the organs and the harvesting was completed on Friday.

“While we are splitting the liver to use on two young patients at Global, the heart and lungs went to Apollo Hospital and the eyes to Sankara Nethralaya,” Dr. Varghese said.
