In connection with a news report: “In an age of apps, shorthand gets short shrift” that was published on Wednesday, May 13, S.R. Sivasubramanian and M. Sugumar, honorary president and secretary respectively of The Stenographers’ Guild, say that more than 150 students appeared for the government technical examination in the 1990’s. Several institutions in the city offer shorthand and typewriting coaching even today and the Guild itself is 76 years old.

At present, 136 students are studying in the Guild, they said adding that in February this year, the institution had sent 50 and 62 students for the shorthand and typing examinations respectively in the exams conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education.

A total of 700 students had passed the exam throughout Tamil Nadu, they added.
