150 sovereigns of gold, Rs. 16 lakh stolen from house in Kodungaiyur

In a daring daylight robbery on Wednesday, burglars stole 150 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 16 lakh in cash.The incident occurred at an independent house in Vivekananda Nagar, Kodungaiyur.

Kodungaiyur olice said the burglary took place at the locked house of couple Anthony (38) and Maria Christie (33) on Radhakrishnan Salai. Anthony, who runs a shop selling cameras and photography equipment on Kasi Chetty Street, Parrys Corner, left for work on Wednesday morning while Maria, along with their two sons, went to her mother’s house in Washermenpet.

Maria and the children returned around 6 p.m. to find the iron grill in front of their home cut open using a hacksaw, which was lying on the ground. The house had been ransacked and two almirahs were broken open. Gold jewellery weighing 150 sovereigns and Rs. 16 lakh in cash was missing, police added.

Speaking to The Hindu over the telephone, Mr. Anthony confirmed that the burglary had taken place at his residence but refused to divulge details about the loss of property and cash.

Senior police officials including N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, Joint Commissioner of Police, West (in-charge) went to the house and conducted preliminary investigations. Fingerprint experts lifted prints from the door and the hacksaw used. Further investigations are on.
