In yet another major burglary, unidentified men stole over 120 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 10 lakh in cash after breaking into a bungalow in Neelankarai.

The incident came to light on Saturday afternoon when a local watchman noticed a door on the rear side of the bungalow was broken.

Sources with the Neelankarai police said the burglary took place at the residence of a realtor and businessman, Gopidas (54) on 4 Cross Street in Kapaleeswarar Nagar. He and his family left for Ooty for a holiday on Thursday morning. Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Srinivasan, a watchman who also works part-time as a real estate broker, spotted the broken door and alerted the Neelankarai police.

A police team including senior officers reached the spot and carried out a preliminary probe at the two-storeyed house. The burglars seemed to have gained access to the compound through an open plot behind the house and then broken the rear door lock, the police said.

The ground floor was ransacked and four almirahs were broken open, Srinivasan said. The gold and cash kept in them were missing.

Investigators collected Gopidas’ mobile number from Srinivasan and contacted him to ascertain the loss suffered. Gopidas and his family rushed back to the city and contacted investigators. The gold and cash stolen is expected to be more than the quantity initially reported, the police said.
