Young couple's suicide bid triggers drama

Published - November 04, 2011 10:16 am IST - Bangalore:

High drama prevailed in front of the City Police Commissioner's office on Infantry Road Thursday evening when a couple arrived there after consuming poison.

According to the police who were at the scene, around 5.15 p.m., Manju (20) and Radhika (16) started throwing up in front of the office. “When we approached them, it was evident they had consumed pesticide. They even had the bottle in hand,” said a police official at the office. A Hoysala squad was called, but as the pair's condition worsened, the police flagged down an autorickshaw.

“We knew that we had to get them to the hospital, and in retrospect, even a 15-minute delay would have probably cost them their lives,” said the official. They were rushed to Bowring Hospital, where their condition was described as “out of danger”.

The couple had apparently consumed the poison elsewhere and had walked to the Commissioner's office. Manju is a painter, and Radhika a helper in a marriage hall, and their parents opposed the relationship. According to personnel at the Police Commissioner's office, the couple said they had married.

Case filed

Around four days ago, Radhika's parents had filed a kidnap case against Manju, the Kumaraswamy Layout police said.
