The BBMP on Friday told the High Court of Karnataka that the work on construction of a road along the periphery of Pattandur Agrahara lake has been stopped.

The BBMP counsel made this submission during the hearing of a PIL petition filed by Whitefield Rising, a public charitable trust founded by Whitefield residents. It was also told on behalf of the BBMP that the civic authority had sought clarification from the Revenue Department on the nature of the land around the lake where the road construction work was taken up. Meanwhile, a counsel for the Bangalore Development Authority told the court that majority of the lake area had been already fenced.

The petitioner has questioned the legality of notification issued on April 24, 2017 for acquiring certain parcels of land for the development of a 24-m road from Varthur, Kodi Road to ITPL Main Road. The notification was challenged, contending that the proposed road runs directly through the green belt/buffer zone of the lake situated in survey number 54 of Pattandur Agrahara.

The move to construct this road is in violation of the law that prohibits construction activities within the green belt/buffer zone of a lake; besides that it posed a threat of causing irreversible ecological and environmental damage to the lake, it is contended in the petition.
