In what may turn out to be yet another thriving kidney racket, Ramanagaram district police on Wednesday registered a suo motu case against Srinivas, and others, for allegedly sourcing a kidney illegally.
This is after the police stumbled upon the case of a 45-year-old woman who donated her kidney recently, without the due procedure being followed. The donor, now identified as Shashikala, a resident of Nagashettihalli and mother of two, was operated upon at a reputed private hospital in Mysuru recently.
The procedure for donating a kidney requires a police verification certificate of the donor by a local police official, not less than the rank of an inspector of police. “In this case, Ramanagaram police have not issued such a certificate. This clearly indicates that due procedure was not followed, and a preliminary investigation has confirmed the involvement of a tout,” said Chandragupta, Superintendent of Police, Ramanagaram.

Magadi police have registered a case under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, and are probing the case.
The police said Shashikala admitted to having sold her kidney for Rs. 3 lakh to an old lady in Cubbon Pet, Bengaluru, and that she knew the family. Shashikala had availed a huge loan from friends and relatives and wanted to clear it. Fake documents were created to get necessary permission for the organ transplant, the police said. In the documents she has been mentioned as Mr. Srinivas’s wife.
Mr. Chandragupta said it was difficult to say whether the case was an isolated one or part of a larger racket.
